The Philips Hue Play Bars are one of the many additions to the Philips Hue smart lighting line up. They can be used to add a splash of colour to whatever the play bar is pointing to and is controlled via the Philips Hue mobile app or the usual suspects in the voice assistant arena such as Google Assistant, Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa. Here is my review of the Philips Hue Play Light Bar.
What are Philips Hue Play Light Bars?
Philips Hue Play Bars are small rectangular bars that can project light onto what ever they are pointing to. As with other colour Philips Hue products the Play Bars allow you to choose from 16 million different colours. Like other Philips Hue products they use LED technology which makes them nice and efficient.
What can the light bars be used for?
The Philips Hue Play Bars have many uses but the best use for them is around entertainment areas. As an example I have placed three of them behind the TV, one on each side and one in the centre. You can then setup an entertainment area within the Philips Hue app and position the lights in the correct place within the entertainment area. You can then create a nice effect around the edge of your TV.
You can see from the photo above, the colour fill from these lights is really good. You can also go one step further and buy the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box which will then allow the Play Bars to sync the colour with what is on your TV at any time.
If you have your laptop connected to your TV you can also create the same effect as the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box by installing the Philips Hue App on your laptop. This will then sync the lights to whatever is displayed on your screen.
Whats In The Box?
There are 2 base packs that you can buy. One has one Play Light Bar in and the other has 2 Play light Bars in.
As standard you get the following in the box:
Philips Hue Light Bar(s)
Vertical Mounting Bracket(s) - Stand the light bars in a vertical position.
Horizontal Mounting Bracket(s) - Stand or attach the light bars in a horizontal position.
3M Sticky Pad(s) - Allow you to attach brackets to surfaces, TV's or monitors.
Power adaptor - You can run upto 3 light bars from a single power adaptor.
Instructions and Stuff - The usual documentation you get with products.
You can also purchase an extension pack which includes the following in the box:
One Philips Hue Light Bar
One Vertical Mounting Bracket
One Horizontal Mounting Bracket
One 3M Sticky Pad
You don't get a power adaptor with the extension pack as you can use the spare power connector on your existing power adaptor to power the additional bar.
How much do the light bars cost?
As with all Philips Hue lighting products they are priced in the premium price bracket.
A single bar base pack costs around £64.99
A double bar base pack costs around £119.99
A single bar extension pack costs around £54.99
So for the setup we have in the photo above with 3 bars the cost is around £174.98
Are they worth the money?
The Philips Hue Play Light Bars are a great addition if you you already have Philips Hue lighting in your home. They provide a great range of colours and can make any area of a room look fantastic. Personally, yes they are worth the money.
