There are plenty of options when it comes to smart lighting for your home and which one you choose will depend on a number of things such as which smart assistant you are using and also what your budget is.
But for me there is one solution that stands high above the rest and that is Philips Hue.
What Makes Philips Hue Different?
One of the major differences is that Philips Hue doesn't rely on your home wireless network to talk to the individual lights. Instead Philips Hue uses a hub that plugs into your wireless router and then uses its own network to talk between the hub and the Philips Hue lights. There is also one more very clever thing that Philips Hue does to ensure good communication to all lights in your house.
The Philips Hue hub uses a networking technology called Zigbee to communicate with the lights. Zigbee is a mesh network technology meaning that each light doesn't always have a direct connection to the hub. Instead it can communicate to the hub via other Philips Hue lighting products. So those rooms furthest away from the hub shouldn't have any issues connecting as long as they can talk to another Philips Hue product between it and the hub.
What Do I Need To Get Started?
As I mentioned above you need to have a Philips Hue hub that is plugged into your wireless router. Once you have this in place you can start adding Philips Hue bulbs and other Philips Hue products. You can buy a number of different Philips Hue starter kits over on Amazon which normally come with a Philips Hue hub and a a couple of bulbs.
Whats The Cost And Why Philips Hue?
Philips Hue products are certainly not the cheapest smart lighting products around, but from my experience it is one of the most reliable, flexible and most functional smart lighting solutions on the market. There are regular updates to both the lighting products and also the mobile app that you use to manage the devices. There are a vast range of lighting products from basic smart light bulbs through to outdoor lighting products and everything in between.
Prices start at around £44.99 for a smart light bulb but you can always get deals on starter kits which contain the hub and a bulb for around £60 on Amazon.
Would I Recommend Philips Hue?
We have Philips Hue throughout the house, it works really well with the home assistants that we use which are Amazon Alexa and Siri and I can't say I have had any issues. Yes the cost of the products are slightly higher but its well worth paying the extra for the reliability and functionality that you get.
